The 2007 Piddock Day Skip Rope Contest winner
As has been the custom for many years, Diane told "Elsie Piddock Skips in her Sleep" — Eleanor Farjeon's classic story of spirit and community — on September 15th. And, as has been the custom, there was a skip rope contest after the stories, with one of Diane's books as a prize for the winner.
This year's winner was Annabelle Heckler (age 28), who works for 1199SEIU (United Healthcare Workers East). She amazed everybody with her style and perseverance (she skipped more than ten minutes), and continued to skip (with a skip rope from Haiti) even after it was clear that she was the winner. Her prize is a signed copy of The Glass Mountain.
One of the glowing audience members was the mother of the Winner, storyteller Melissa Heckler; her birthday happens to be September 15th.
Rachel Zucker, the author of The Bad Wife Handbook (age 35, heroic mother of three boys), came in second place. She received Begin Again: The Poems of Grace Paley.
Julia Metzger (age 9, and a fourth grader at Manhattan New School), who came in third place, received a signed copy of Sun Mother Wakes the World.
Congratulations to all the winners, and blessings to all who came to listen or skip!
