Storytelling Workshop with Diane Wolkstein

New York City

Thursday, December 27th, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Well–told stories entertain, teach, heal, nourish the soul and take us on great adventures. To know a good story is to have a treasure no one can take away. Telling the right story at the right moment is the work of the storyteller.

This workshop with master storyteller and teacher Diane Wolkstein was created for everyone who loves stories, wants to hear more stories, or wants to learn to tell stories. Participants experimented with different storytelling techniques — verbal and physical — and each person was given an opportunity to tell a story. Diane discussed approaches to developing storytelling talents, described different genres of story, and even told some great examples of story.

A Joyous Benefit

for the Libraries of New Orleans

Scandinavia House

58 Park Avenue at 37th Street, New York City

Saturday, November 10th, 2007 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

In November of 2005 — in response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina — Diane Wolkstein organized a benefit, featuring the Hans Christian Andersen Storytellers, to raise money for storytelling programs in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. This resulted in a six–week summer story program for the Jefferson Parish Libraries.

And we can still do so much more.

And that is why we are grateful to everyone who joined us for a joyous gala benefit for the summer programs of the libraries of New Orleans and Cameron Parish on November 10th, featuring fun stories from the Hans Christian Andersen Storytellers — Diane Wolkstein, Therese Folkes–Plair, Melissa Heckler, and Ron Sopyla — and the music of New Orleans jazz musician Paul Peress, pianist/composer David Kelly, electric guitarist/singer Michael Campbell, and acoustic guitarist Charles Hipster. Special kudos go out to the children who joined us on stage during some of the music!

You are still encouraged to make donations in support of more library storytelling programs for the families of New Orleans. Please send your donations to:

Certificate in Applied Mythology:

The First Story

David Gonzalez & Diane Wolkstein

META Center New York

214 West 29th Street (16th Floor), New York City

(between 7th and 8th Avenues)

Thursday, October 18th, 2007 from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.

The Certificate Program in Applied Mythology is an intimate one–year program with an extraordinary faculty. The course unites the finest minds in the academic, social, and artistic arenas, whose common thread is a deep understanding and every day application of mythic imagination. Between them, these teachers use myth and archetype in the realms of the highest levels of politics, inside prisons and with the homeless, with youth, in the university and as the foundation of art, from Broadway performance to the Kennedy Center. Authors of numerous books, plays, papers as well as operas and games, the Applied Mythology faculty conducts a remarkable series of master classes, coordinated by the Creative Director and Co–president of Mythic Imagination Institute.

On October 18th, at the beautiful META Center New York, David Gonzalez and Diane Wolkstein — two master performers — combined their talents and love of story to present two of the world's most riveting myths: Inanna and Orpheus. Their presentation, was the kickoff of the year–long course on Applied Mythology.

As a special treat, they told together the Grimm fairy tale of "The Glass Mountain" — the story of the Princess who Rescues herself.

Please visit the Mythic Imagination Institute website for further details on the Program.
